Alistair Carr

Earlier this year, Alistair Carr became 'the first white man in living memory' to travel across a vast terrain called The Manga where, with a rebellion to the north and south of his route, he did so by camel with former Tubu rebels; he discovered a landscape and way of life completely untouched by the modern world, and found that the Old Salt Road is very much alive.

Framed in a country, now officially ranked the poorest in the world and set along the tidemark between the Sahara and the Sahel, Carr is writing a personal account of his voyage with these Islamic nomads; a story of duality, spirituality, simplicity and the touching of souls - a book juxtaposed between today's western values and those more timeless ones honoured by both the nomads and our ancestors.

Because of the growing conflict between the Saharan nomads and the Niger government, these places are now out of bounds to all foreigners.

Alistair's first book, The Singing Bowl, is an account of that journey through Inner Asia.
